VoIP Switching

Whether you are a business owner or just the average person looking for a way to shave off a portion of your telecommunication costs, the option of VoIP may be the way to go. With just a minimal outlay for start up equipment and software, you can be quickly making long distance calls at a fraction of a cost of the traditional phone company.

Voice Switching Technology

Switching from a public switched telephone network (PTSN) to a VoIP network is effortless, and can be very beneficial. Those old fashioned PTSN calls are made with circuit switching where a communication path between 2 parties is established as long as the communication is continuing. Circuit switching is normally very expensive for overseas communications as the billing is based on per minute charge.

In VoIP communications, there is no permanent circuit between the 2 parties communicating. Voice signal is “packetized” and send across the internet in exactly the same manner as other data packets moving around in the network. With the advancement in internet technology, packet switching can be as fast as circuit switching, allowing the 2 communication parties to speak and listen to each other as if there is a clear circuit between them.

Efficiency Of VoIP Switching

Packet switching is a more efficient than circuit switching basically because the connections that are made between the two parties are not in use at all times. There are lulls in conversations; there is listening on one end and talking on the other, these things are not taken into account with the circuit switching network. Just like the internet connection, packet switching bundles the given information and sends it along a route that can travel through any number of paths rather than in one single, dedicated pathway.

A VoIP system takes information and sends it as a small packet to the address it is given at the start of the call or session. The address is the phone number, the email address or the website that we are sending this information to. This packet is then sent through the pathways, delivered to the right person and reassembled in a readable way. The advantage of packet switching over circuit switching is the efficiency with which the information is set along the many pathways. The router will choose the least used pathway, allowing for more options and faster transmission time. Because VoIP uses this technology, it can make your phone calls in a much more efficient and therefore cheaper way, allowing for a huge reduction in the costs of communication.
