The Digest ranked top VoIP providers and reported six leaders within the VoIP industry, all competing for a share of the 1.5 billion-subscriber market. These major VoIP providers are: Charter Communications, Cablevision, Time Warner, Comcast, Skype and Vonage.

The one-year snapshot of Cablevision performance indicates the generally constant level throughout 2008; except for Cablevision there was a significant climb in the stock up to September before it declined sharply into the end of the year by over 50% of its original peak stock value of 30 in September.

The long-term snapshot above provides a clearer comparison with Charter and a clearer picture of VoIP industry performance as well. Cablevision also suffered the same decline from 2001 through 2002, but Cablevision recovered more strongly than Charter in 2003, followed by a more constant and steady climb all the way to 2007. Cablevision’s stock also indicates a clear decline starting in the middle of 2007, providing supporting evidence that the Telecom industry (and, by association, the VoIP industry) is suffering significantly from the recent downturn of worldwide markets.
