Telecommunication technology is ever changing. Once, the telephone was only available in select locations and hardly anybody had their own personal line. Then the phone became more and more popular and soon it was in nearly every American home.
Evolution Of Telephone System
Traditional phone networks use circuits which are basically inefficient and as more and more people make calls, prone to log jams and tie ups. To handle the volume, the phone company has had to install more lines and service more circuits which add to the expense of the service.
Customers looking for a cheaper way of making calls turned to cellular phone service and abandoned their landlines in those areas where that was an option. But, the cell phones that had made the phone company a dinosaur are now lumbering into the price stratosphere themselves, sending countless customers looking for a cheaper, yet reliable alternative.
Low Cost Telecommunications
Once the Internet became something you could count on, it was only a matter of time before it became part of the telecommunications powerhouse. People use their computers not only for email and surfing the web, but now they can use them for making their long distance phone calls as well. VoIP is a system that allows users to make phone calls over the Internet’s broadband connection. Using one of three styles of phones, the caller connects to the system and the call is routed via the IP address and connected. Long distance phone calls made over VoIP are either free or very low cost, making it a monster competitor for the outdated and very expensive phone company.
Advantages Of VoIP
VoIP systems are not only fairly inexpensive, they are easy to install and straightforward to use. VoIP has many advantages including: more efficient capabilities for handling phone traffic. This efficiency allows the companies to keep their prices relative low, which is a distinct benefit for the customer. Of course, there are some drawbacks to the VoIP systems such as: a lack of a backup source in case of power outage. If the electric is not there, neither are your VoIP services. And lastly, there are some issues with phone quality, mainly due to the normal problems of broadband service. Of course, this is a new technology and as more and more people start using it, the service will only get better and better.
