VoIP Cell Phone

VoIP-enabled cell phones are beginning to be popular in consumer market. Nokia is the leading supplier in the VoIP-enabled cell phone market as most Nokia models come with WiFi and SIP softphone. VoIP cell phones are dual-mode cell phones allowing customers to make cell phone calls over a VoIP network when it is within a WiFi Hotspot. If there is no internet access, the cell phone will be fallback automatically on normal 3G network to make calls.

Dual-mode cell phones

The WiFi radio in the cell phone enables it to make VoIP calls through a wireless internet router. As many of us are always near to our wireless router, be it at home or in office, it is therefore very convenient for us to use our cell phone to make VoIP calls. Nowadays wireless internet is commonly found in public places, restaurants, hotels and fast food outlets. It makes it very convenient for VoIP calls to be made even when we are in a meeting or even having business lunch.

VoIP connection on the cell phone can be set either to auto-connect or manual connect. When set to auto-connect, the cell phone will automatically connect to internet when it is in range of a wireless internet network. All calls made through the WiFi internet network are free. When the cell phone is out of range with WiFi signal, it automatically switches over to regular 3G cellular network and calls are charged as normal.

My pFingo On Nokia

I have been using my Nokia running Singapore-based pFingo VoIP Service since February 2008. It costs me only SGD $8 (less than US $6) per month to make unlimited local calls. With Nokia phone, switching between my mobile SIM number and my SIP number is just a button press.
