Although VoIP does have its place in the office set up, it is not reliable enough quite yet to take the place of all PSTN and mobile calling plans. It can however, be useful to add an additional line, especially for those set ups that are already frequent computer users. It just makes sense to use your computer to make phone calls if you are going to be setting there anyway.

VoIP Startup Investment

The equipment is not expensive to get started. In many cases the software is a free download. Hook up the right connections to the right places, download and install the right program and off you go, making phone calls while you are busy doing other things. This set up would truly benefit the people who want to do away with their expensive landlines but do not want to over use their cell phones either. It would also be beneficial to those people who find that they do not have cell phone service at one location or another for whatever reason.

Do some researches before you rush out and buy the gear however, remember, you will need high speed internet access to make VoIP phone calls, and you may not have that in certain places. Many rural areas remain cell and high-speed Internet service free, so know what is available to you.

Immediate Savings On Investment

Voice over Internet IP will allow other aspects of your telecommunications network to remain active in the money making aspect of your business, and it will save you money. Say that for instance, you are making a ten phone calls to Fresno during a week’s time. Those phone calls cost roughly $15 each, for a total of $150. During the course of a month, those calls are going to equal out to $600, a huge chunk for any company to expend on one business contact. Now, say that if a call is known to last over ten minutes of time, it will be made using VoIP and all other calls will be made with either system; the savings would be immediate and remarkable. The business does not think that Fresno is any less important, nor do they care any less, they are just going to save money and increase their profit margin.

Embracing VoIP Technology

The same concept can be applied to VoIP for home use as well. For those calls that are local or brief in duration, it would be perfectly fine to use the landline telephone, but if you calling relatives in another state, it would be cheaper in the long run to use voice over internet IP. Because you can call anybody, no matter what type of network they are currently using, there is no need to let anybody know that how you are calling.

Either way, home or office, it might not be the best idea to make voice over internet your only telecommunications method for beginners. However, in time to come, the efficient and economical VoIP is likely to be the only communication in home or office.

Once upon a time, only the most elite of people had a telephone in their home. Then, once the technology got better and truly caught on, the majority of homes, especially in urban areas had one, and one alone. Flash forward a couple of decades and the lowly telephone had found its way into multiple rooms in the home, sometimes even the bathroom!

From Telephone To Mobile Phone

Of course, technology never stagnates for long, and the telecommunications arena soon had a new contender when mobile calling became a reality. It was nothing to see busy city streets filled with people chatting away on mammoth wireless phones. The networks soon got bigger to keep up with the ever growing demand, while the phones got smaller to please the public.

Soon the basic phone had features like built in cameras, music and games. The boring ring gave way to nearly any sound bite or effect that you could imagine. Cell phones are now in every color, and some do more tricks than even the most techno forward people could imagine. But cell phone plans can be tricky and very expensive; at times they are even more expensive than the traditional landline phone service. Fed up, phone customers far and wide have cried out for a more cost effective alternative for their telecommunication needs and finally, their cries have been heard.

VoIP Products And Services

Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP has actually been around for a while now, but is really seeing a surge in usage now. With VoIP, a user can make long distance calls via your broadband Internet connection for free. With a minimum of equipment, the user is soon seeing huge savings for all of their calls, often enough to more than make up for some of the minor disadvantages of the service. There are bound to be some bugs in the system, and while some are more serious than others, customers should rest assured that the service will only improve with time and its own growing popularity.

Many companies have brought VoIP in as an integral part of their telecommunications system although many have stopped short of converting to a solely VoIP network. The bugs in the systems and the inherent drawbacks prevent that at this time, but it will probably be a reality in the coming years. Both the business and private user should be confident in the service and its coming improvement.

VoIP Growth Potential

The service offers many of the same features of the traditional telephone service, including call waiting, caller id and others, although just like the phone company, VoIP service providers may charge extra fees for these.

VoIP is not a passing fancy; the technology will catch on for more and more people. Regular phone systems will be phased out in certain parts of the country as the demand for service overextends and overtaxes the circuit based systems. Circuits are expense to install and maintain, driving the cost of using them beyond the reach of many families. Packet switching, such as that by used VoIP is more cost effective and much more efficient. The savings are then passed on to the customer who enjoys a low monthly fee and free long distance service, a win-win for everyone.

The one-year snapshot of Time Warner Cable performance is almost identical to Charter and Cablevision, with a generally constant level/upward trend throughout 2008, until mid-September when the stock declined, as the others did, by over 50% of its original stock value.

Eight-Year Stock Trending

Time Warner Cable only began trading on the New York Stock exchange in March of 2007, so there is no long-term comparison for this company.

The one-year snapshot of Cablevision performance indicates the generally constant level throughout 2008; except for Cablevision there was a significant climb in the stock up to September before it declined sharply into the end of the year by over 50% of its original peak stock value of 30 in September.

Eight-Year Stock Trending

The long-term snapshot above provides a clearer comparison with Charter and a clearer picture of VoIP industry performance as well. Cablevision also suffered the same decline from 2001 through 2002, but Cablevision recovered more strongly than Charter in 2003, followed by a more constant and steady climb all the way to 2007. Cablevision’s stock also indicates a clear decline starting in the middle of 2007, providing supporting evidence that the Telecom industry (and, by association, the VoIP industry) is suffering significantly from the recent downturn of worldwide markets.

Although voice over Internet has been around for a while, it is just now starting to take off in leaps and bounds. The poor economy is certainly playing a major role in that growth as more and more companies start thinking outside the box for ways to save money in every aspect of their business. The traditional phone companies, who held such a strangle hold on the business world for so long are now quaking in fear as more and more of their customers are running full force to VoIP. This service and providers is taking root, and growing at an astonishing rate. All it takes is for one company to show a fairly sizable profit from the switch and others will quickly follow suit.

Improve Business Competitiveness

VoIP is the new craze. It is technology’s current answer to the pet rock. Not only do people love to get in on the ground floor of the newest thing, when that technology can save them money at the same time, they nearly go insane. You know how a trend starts among your group of friends; one person gets an item, and then raves about it. The next day, the next person in the group buys one and raves as well, and pretty soon the whole group has the latest gizmo or service. It is the same within the business world, only on a much bigger scale. One fast food corporation buys and begins using a new techno toy and gets a huge write up in a trade publication. Knowing there is no such thing as bad publicity; the rival food company gets a similar techno-toy for themselves and drops hints to another trade paper hoping to get a similar write up as well.

Once a company, whichever one gets to be the experimenting, tester for the new technology, finds out how profitable or costly a new technology can be, the word will spread fairly quickly. Soon, others will want the same product or service, increasing demand. Establishing a strong customer base will cement the new technology, making room for adjustments and improvements. Once the majority of the bugs are out of the system, all but the most resistant companies will have leapt onboard. Of course, by that time, a new technology will have arisen and the whole process will start over anew.

Advantage Of Mobile Communication

When mobile phones first hit the market, they were large, bulky things with very limited features and an even more limited range. As more and more customers started demanding mobile services, more towers were built. Once that first company started seeing a profit in the market, more companies sprung up to get their share and the competition took off from there. Now one out of every three Americans carry a mobile phone of some kind, and the features that they have nowadays are phenomenal. Mobile phones are so small they can fit in the palm of your hand. You can get camera phones, or music playing phones, or phones that do both. From the brick sized phones of old, come the latest, hottest phones in nearly every imaginable color, just because the demand was there.

Just as with the cell phone companies, the VoIP providers know that the demand for their services will be soon. Competition for new and established customers will soon heat up, with new services and possibly lower rates. The networks will increase in size making calls even faster and more reliable to make. Quality of service will increase as well, and other improvements will also be made. To keep the customers, these companies will do whatever it takes, as long as it does not interfere with their own profit margins, of course.

Business Cost Effectiveness

As the voice over Internet industry takes off and improves call quality, more and more companies will be rushing to make the move themselves. Those businesses that are already using their computer to make free long distance phone calls are not only saving money, they are sitting way ahead of the game in what looks to be a massive techno-explosion as razor thin profit margins force more and more companies to look for alternatives to expensive PSTN calls. Being on the cutting edge of this technology will allow businesses to start saving money with VoIP now and be first in line for every advance and improvement that comes along as it grows in popularity.

VoIP security services is one industry niche that is fast growing. A number of security concerns and needs can be met using VoIP technologies. Additionally, VoIP can be used strategically in coordination with Wi-Fi networks in order to provide cutting-edge technologies for both the small homeowner as well as the facilities manager.

Facility and Residential Technologies

Pixavi is an example of a Wi-Fi device that can be integrated with the existing Wi-Fi network at a home or business in order to provide access to a security camera anywhere on the property that’s within Wi-Fi range. Combined with VoIP voice devices that are Wi-Fi enabled would provide homeowners and business owners with the ability to interact with someone at a gate or entrance without having to open the door or talk to the visitor in person.

Creative has made leap into the world of VoIP and Wi-Fi integration with its InPerson videoconferencing device. This Wi-Fi enabled device looks like a small laptop, but when it’s flipped open, it reveals a camera and interface that looks like something from a science fiction movie. With this device, people within a facility, regardless of their vicinity to a computer, can take part in a videoconference wherever they are.

VoIP Security And News Resources

Other solutions businesses and residences could consider utilizing VoIP include Internet-Phones that are WiFi enabled so that facilities personnel, such as electricians and mechanics, can communicate throughout the facility. Or a two building residence, such as duplex or a camp with multiple buildings, could install a Wi-Fi telephone system that doesn’t require any wiring to install.

Some VoIP websites offer the latest VoIP security and industry news.

WhichVoIP is a creative website that helps you compare VoIP plans, provides reviews of the many VoIP services, and also offers Articles, News, an FAQ and more.

VoIP Hype is a long-running and successful blog that covers updates regarding the latest moves within the VoIP industry, including the strongest companies, the latest products and other industry news.

CNet is a well-established technology website that offers a great deal of content on VoIP technologies and news.

There are a number of websites and tools related to the VoIP industry that already exist, which target the online gaming market. These include communication products that serve gamers, or VoIP embedded directly into online gaming websites and purchased gaming software. This niche represents a tremendous opportunity for promotion and marketing of VoIP products and services.

Main Gaming Suppliers

Through the Xbox Live network, Microsoft offers gamers an embedded VoIP functionality where players can talk to each other over the Xbox Live IP network during game play. According to a ZDNet News article, Microsoft serves over 750,000 subscription customers who log over 500,000 hours of game play every day. All XBox live games include VoIP functionality, offering a tremendous niche market for VoIP companies to introduce their technology through gaming.

Sony was originally at the head of the pack with the Playstation PS2 game station. The PS2 system enabled players to voice chat over the IP network, with popular VoIP enabled games such as “SOCOM: U.S. Navy Seals” leading the way. Not only did this game become on of the first VoIP games on the market, but the programmers were also the first to develop very successful software codecs that compressed and decompressed voice traffic using a peer-to-peer approach. Once the game was released, the VoIP industry took notice and used much of the technology in later advancements.

Specialized VoIP Gaming Solutions

Ventrilo is another VoIP group communication software solution for PCs. The unique quality of Ventrilo is that the programmers have written codec software to incorporate surround sound and sound effects. Ventrilo programmers seek to write software that offers maximum sound quality and minimum CPU usage. Its focus is the gaming community because core gamers highly value their CPU resource consumption. So for this niche market, high voice quality and low CPU demand is a priority.

Globe7 is a free software product that allows you to make free PC-to-PC calls. Globe7 is a software product that’s already been integrated into a number of computer games, the SoftPhone, IM software, and a number of website widgets.

The trend for “business voip” is fascinating. While interest in business VoIP remained strong and constant throughout 2005 and 2006, it saw no growth. Suddenly, in January of 2007, Securities Industry News reported that Eze Castle Integration launched “Eze Business VoIP Solutions,” and interest spiked drastically up to March, then again almost as high through July, and then by fall of 2007, popularity of the search term fell lower than 2005/2006 levels, and it’s been steadily declining ever since. Again, interest remains strong, but it appears the initial “novelty factor,” a common draw with new technology, has simply warn off.
